An Eye-Opener

Description

I'm interested in Surrealistic art.

But - ever since I saw the surrealist silent film "Un Chien Andalou" (An Andalusian Dog) by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali I was haunted by the infamous eye-slitting scene. Ouch!! Despite (or because of) this shocking bit the film is a masterpiece of the surrealist realm.
To quote Wikipedia: The film has no plot, in the conventional sense of the word. The chronology of the film is disjointed, jumping from the initial "once upon a time" to "eight years later" without the events or characters changing very much. It uses dream logic in narrative flow that can be described in terms of then-popular Freudian free association, presenting a series of tenuously related scenes.

Don't ask me why the heck I had to sit down and actually draw this. It's probably post-trauma-self-therapy.
(And why do I have that soft spot for Sweeney Todd? "A proper artist with his knife"... *makes appointment with her analyst*)

Black pastels on velour-surface paper, 24 x 33 cm

EDIT: I add a link to a short video which puts a few iconic images of surrealist art in a nutshell: [link]
